3 Ways to Be of Service to Veterans This 4th of July

As we discuss BBQs and family get-togethers in preparation to celebrate our country’s independence, we would be remiss not to acknowledge those who fight for it. Servicemen and women volunteer to stand on the front lines. They defend our country’s freedoms, encountering dangers and circumstances that many of us could only imagine. Sometimes, adjusting to life after the military can be tough. Fortunately, there are numerous ways that we can help. Here are three ways to be of service to veterans.

1. Sponsor a Companion Animal

Veterans transitioning to civilian life can benefit from the unique connection that a pet can provide. As a result, Pets for Vets, and other programs like it, match veterans with rescue animals to improve the lives of both parties. Because companion animals help veterans overcome trauma, they are wonderful destressors. Additionally, pets lead to healthier lives, and establish a longstanding sense of security and belonging. Pets for Vets has chapters all over the country and plenty of opportunities to volunteer or donate. 2. Transportation

Injured, disabled, and elderly veterans sometimes need rides to and from their medical appointments. In response, Nationwide nonprofits like DAV (Disabled American Veterans) work with volunteers to provide transportation when needed. Charities like DAV need drivers, appointment setters, and donations to aid in continuing their mission. If you are a skilled driver, or have a passion for assisting veterans who are seeking medical treatment, this may be the perfect service opportunity for you.

3. Employment Assistance

Finally, a majority of veterans discharge without jobs awaiting them at home. Attempting to transition from military careers to civilian careers isn’t always easy. Consequently, nonprofits like Hire Heroes USA make a huge difference in the job hunt process of service members. Programs like these offer veteran job seekers resume revision services, mock interviews, career counseling, professional headshots, and much more. Volunteer opportunities align with the aforementioned services and expand to other career-related ventures. Service members play an integral role in our country. Their sacrifice is grand. Because of them, we continue to maintain the lives and civil liberties we’ve grown accustomed to. Therefore, we can help in return. So, why not put your talents and skills to use to help military members in need? To conclude, keep this list as a reference for three ways to be of service to veterans. With it, you’ll be able to connect with national nonprofits currently working hard to make a difference in the lives of our military members.
